Gene recognition

It’s always an odd feeling when your work starts to get recognized. Sitting alone, typing away, it’s often hard to remember that total strangers will eventually have a say in how you’re perceived.

I was thrilled to be told recently that Gene has been listed in The Rough Guide to Crime Fiction, right alongside works by giants like Chandler and Hammett.

Gene was a tough nut to crack. Very much an experiment, I deliberately tried to mix two genres and see what came out. I still get mixed messages about it. Some people love it. Others have a tough time wrapping their heads around it. Is it a crime novel? Historical fiction? A techno thriller?

Well, I guess Rough Guides finally answered the question. It’s a crime novel.
